Wilfred Edward Foulger

A Private with 7th Bn., Wilfred died on 2nd of October 1915 at the age of 18.

Wilfred was born at Covehithe in June 1897, a son of Robert George and Amy Georginanna Foulger. He was baptised at Saint Andrews Church, Covehithe, on 17 July 1898.

In 1901 his family lived at Jarvis Terrace, Carlton Colville, and by 1911 at 6, Epsom Terrace, Kirkley. (Later they would like at 6 Groom Terrace Kirkley Run Lowestoft).

Wilfred arrived in France with the 7th Battalion Suffolk Regiment on 30th May 1915, shortly before his 18th birthday. In late September 1915 the 7th battalion moved to front-line trenches at Loos. The battalion was subjected to sporadic enemy shell-fire for most of 2nd October 1915, but at 8 p.m. a sudden enemy barrage opened up and hit members of the battalion's working parties at the 'Chalk Pit' and 'A' Companies water party (bringing fresh water for the men in the trenches). Although the battalion war diary states 'casualties not severe' Wilfred was killed on that day.

Wilfred had four brothers who served in the First World War: Robert, James and Ernest served with the Royal Navy (Ernest was killed in action at Jutland) and John, who served with the Norfolk Regiment.
