130142 The Waller Raid

13 Jan 1942 Raid ”Lowestoft's worst raid of the war came at a time when attack was to be least expected. It was snowing and just before dusk on 13th January 1942 when a single Dornier glided over the coast unheard and released four bombs in the main shopping area, killing seventy people. The biggest casualty list occurred in Waller's restaurant where many civilians and Service folk were at tea. Almost a complete block of large shops was devastated , as were several other business premises. The town's biggest cinema, the Odeon which was opposite, was severely blasted.” Also Morlings shop

A Civilian, George died on 13th of January 1942 aged 43. George was born at Lowestoft on 7 August 1898, a son of William A. and Caroline Gayfer. In 1901 his family lived at 171 Saint Margaret’s Road. By 1911 their home was at 2 Sussex Road.  130142 The Waller Raid
A Civilian, Leslie died on 13th of January 1942 at the age of 14. Son of Emma May Gayfer of 74 Long Road and of George Birkwood Gayfer. Died at London Road North. 130142 The Waller Raid
A Civilian, Margery died on 13th of January 1942 at the age of 38. Margery was born at Sheerness, Kent, on 22 December 1903, a daughter of Jesse and Annie E. Kerrison. In 1911 her family lived at 17 Vicarage Road, Chelmsford, Essex. By 1921 they were living at 5 London Road, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, and Margery was a clerk at the Rollight Engineering Company, London Road, Chipping Norton.  130142 The Waller Raid
A Civilian, Megan died on 13th of January 1942 at the age of 18. Megan was born at Lowestoft on 6 January 1924, a daughter of William Bertie and Gladys Edmonds. In 1939 her family lived at 67 Lorne Park Road. Megan died at London Road North during the Waller Raid. 130142 The Waller Raid
A Civilian, Audrey died on 13th of January 1942 aged 34. Audrey was born at Lowestoft on 15 December 1907, a daughter of Herbert John and Lucy Emma Moyse. She was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 26 July 1908, and her family lived at 4 Gordon Terrace, Oulton Road. By 1911 her family were living at 3 Diamond Terrace, Beccles Road, Oulton Broad, and this was still their home in 1939 when Audrey worked as a kitchen help. Note that Audrey’s family’s address was also known as 75 Beccles Road. 130142 The Waller Raid
A Civilian, Dorothy died on 13th of January 1942 at the age of 35. Dorothy was born at Lowestoft on 3 March 1906, a daughter of Jack and Florence B. Crispin. From 16 January 1911 she attended Lovewell School, Kirkley. The 1911 Census shows her family living at 1 Bixley Place, Bixley Road, Lowestoft, and this was their home in for the rest of Dorothy's life. In 1921 Dorothy worked as a greengrocer's assistant for A. Dorling at London Road. By 1939 she was a printing machine feeder (unemployed). Dorothy died at London Road North. 130142 The Waller Raid
A Civilian, Olive died on 13th of January 1942 aged 20. Olive was born at Carlton Colville on 16 May 1921, a daughter of James and Marion Victoria Thrower. She was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 26 June 1921 and her family lived at Todd’s Cottages, Carlton Colville. Later her family lived at Sandy Lane, Gisleham. Olive died at Waller’s Restaurant, 90 London Road North, during the Waller Raid.  130142 The Waller Raid
A Civilian, Oliver died on 13th of January 1942 aged 50. Oliver was born at Colchester on 27 February 1891 a son of James Edward Golding and Priscilla Golding. His family lived at 27 Saint Mary’s Road, Colchester. Oliver was baptised at Saint Botolph’s Church, Colchester, on 16 October 1900, and his family lived at 66 Priory Street, which was still their home in 1911 when Oliver was a grocer’s assistant.  130142 The Waller Raid
Muriel Evelyn  Jean Whitlam
A Civilian, Muriel died on 13th of January 1942 aged 20. Muriel was born at Lowestoft on 4 October 1921, a daughter of William Robert and Alice Maud Whitlam. In 1939 her family lived at 8 Oaklands Terrace, Kessingland, and Muriel was in domestic service. Muriel at Waller’s Restaurant, 90 London Road North, during the Waller Raid. Muriel was buried at Saint Edmund’s Churchyard, Kessingland, on 22 January 1942. (Her mother died in March 1942).  130142 The Waller Raid
A Civilian, Alfred died on 13th of January 1942 aged 46. Alfred was born at Hitcham, Buckinghamshire, on 26 March 1895, a son of Edward and Ann Slater. He was baptised at St Mary’s Church on 5 May 1895. In 1901 his family lived at 4 Bath Cottages, Hitcham, and this was still their home in 1911 when Alfred was an outfitter’s apprentice. By 1921 his family were living at Rotherby, Station Estate, Burnham, Buckinghamshire, and Alfred was an outfitters assistant for J. Hatton & Co. Gentleman’s Outfitters at 3 Queens Street, Maidenhead. 130142 The Waller Raid
