1939 Register

The 1939 Register provides a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. As the 1931 census for England and Wales was destroyed by fire during the Second World War and no census was taken in 1941.

Leonard Wallace Blowers
An Able Seaman with the tug S. S. Aid (London), Leonard died on 29th of November 1940 at the age of 39. Leonard was born at Kessingland on 22 November 1900, a son of Lewis Charles and Minnie Jane Blowers. He was baptised at Saint Edmunds Church, Kessingland, on 20 January 1901. In 1901 his family lived at High Street, Kessingland. By 1911 they were living at High Path, Beach, Kessingland, and this was still their address in 1921 when Leonard worked as a fisherman (either for, or on the, Beamish).  1939 Register
An Engineman with H.M. Drifter Uberty. Sidney died on 7th of May 1941 at the age of 33. Sidney was born at Covehithe on 9 July 1907, a son of Alfred Charles and Charlotte Bond. In 1911 his family lived at Model Cottage, Henstead. By 1939 they were living at 11 Poplar Road, Carlton Colville, and Sidney worked as a stoker - herring fisherman. Sidney was serving on the Uberty when the drifter was bombed by German aircraft and sunk just off Lowestoft Harbour and all thirteen of the crew were lost.  1939 Register
An Engineman with H.M. Drifter Uberty. William died on 7th of May 1941 at the age of 42. William was born at Swaffham on 7 October 1898, a son of William and Rebecca Bye. He was baptised at Saints Peter and Paul Church, Swaffham, on 6 November 1898 and his family lived at Lynn Street, Swaffham. In 1901 his family lived at 90 Lynn Road, Swaffham, and they were still living at Lynn Road in 1911.  1939 Register

A Chief Engineer with Fishing Vessel Aberdeen LT123 (Lowestoft). Frederick died on 11th of March 1941 at the age of 40. Frederick was born at Kessingland on 29 July 1900, a son of Thomas and Rose Elizabeth Catchpole. In 1901 his family lived at Zulu Cottages, Kessingland. By 1911 they were living at 2 Saint Margaret's Terrace, Church Street, Pakefield, and later at 45 Saint Margaret's Road, Pakefield. Frederick married Emma Phoebe Martha Watson in 1924. In 1939 they were living at Florio, Long Road, Pakefield, and Frederick was a trawler engineer.  1939 Register
A Private with the 1st Battalion, Gordon died on 28th of June 1944 aged 19. Gordon was born at Lowestoft on 27 November 1924, a son of Frederick and Emma Florence Jarvis. In 1939 his family lived at 2 Walmer Road and Gordon was a carpenter’s apprentice.Gordon joined the Suffolk Regiment and served with the 1st Battalion in France. His battalion landed at Sword Beach on D-Day and went on to attack, and take, German positions at Colleville-sur-Orne before moving to a position near the Periers Ridge.   1939 Register
A Leading Cook with H.M. Motor Minesweeper 8. Ernest died on 24th of June 1944 at the age of 29. Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 9 October 1914 a son of Ernest Henry and Letitia Moyse. In 1921 his family lived at 8 Jacobs Street, Lowestoft. On 8 October 1938 Ernest married Irene Violet Jackson at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley. Ernest and Irene were both living at Kirkley and Ernest worked as a labourer. By 1939 they were living at The Nest, Long Road, Lowestoft, and Ernest worked as a general labourer.  1939 Register

Hugh Riches Morling
A Leading Aircraftman with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Hugh died on 3rd of July 1943 aged 33. Hugh was born at Lowestoft on 24 August 1909, a son of Ernest Jabez and Ada Maria Morling. In 1911 his family lived at Snowdon House, 146, London Road North. By 1921 they were living at 23 Old Nelson Street and later his father lived at 45 Gunton Drive. In 1935 Hugh married Winifred May Gouldby. By 1939 Hugh and Winifred were living at 20 Ipswich Road and Hugh was the director and joint manager of Pearn’s Radio and Music Retailers and Repairers.  1939 Register, bestpic, FEPOW
A Private with 1st Bn. John died on 9th of July 1944 aged 19. John was born at Lowestoft in 1925, a son of Harry Leon and Adelaide Alice May Allen. John's father died in 1926 and in 1929 his mother married Ernest Bridge. Throughout his life John's family lived at 64 Saint George's Road, Lowestoft.John served with the 1st Battalion Royal Norfolk Regiment. His battalion landed on Red Queen Beach on D-Day, 6 June 1944.  1939 Register
A Second Hand with H.M. Trawler Damito, Thomas died on 13th of July 1940 at the age of 42. Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 14 May 1897, a son of Thomas William and Bertha Lavinia Cole. In 1901 his family lived at 9 Nelson Road, Carlton Colville, and by 1911 they were living at 13 Payne Street, Lowestoft.On 2 May 1916 Thomas joined the Royal Naval Reserve, number 11047 DA. At that time he was living at 28 Edward Street, Milford Haven. During the First World War he served as a Deck Hand with the Sabrina and then the Idaho. He was demobilized on 28 January 1919.  1939 Register
