Arthur Sidney Goddard

A Stoker with H.M.S. Invincible, Arthur died on 31st of May 1916 at the age of 22. Arthur was born at Barnby on 18 March 1894, a son of John and Florence Mary Goddard. He was baptised at Saint Edmunds Church, Kessingland, on 21 November 1897. In 1901 his family lived at Beach Road, Kessingland, ‘near the church.’ By 1911 they were living at 5 Surrey Place, Field Lane, Kessingland, and Arthur was a fisherman.In 1912, after committing a series of offences, Arthur was sentenced to two years detention at a borstal (see The Diss Express 10 January 1913, page 8). Robert Benjamin Weston

A Stoker 1st Class with H.M.S. Queen Mary, Robert died on 31st of May 1916 at the age of 20.Robert was born at Smallborough, near North Walsham, Norfolk, on 7 June 1894, a son of Benjamin and Naomi Weston. In 1901 his family lived at Horning Row, Worstead, Norfolk. By 1911 they were living at Oxpits Cottages, Reedham, Norfolk. Later his parents lived at Hemblington and his sister, Louise, lived at Lound Road, Blundeston. Robert joined the Royal Navy, as a Stoker 2nd Class, on 2 December 1912. Edward George Arter

A Leading Seaman with H.M.S. Chester. Edward died on 31st of May 1916 at the age of 36. Edward was born at (West) Rudham, Norfolk, on 25 May 1880 (according to the 1881 Census) but several records state that he was born at Dunton. he was a son of Noah and Mary Ann Arter.In 1881 his family lived at Gate House No. 11, Dunton cum Doughton, Norfolk. He was baptised at Dunton on 26 February 1882 and his family lived at Doughton. By 1891 Edward's father had died and his family lived at 3 Angrave Street, Shoreditch. Battle of Jutland

Alfred Thomas Owen

A Stoker 1st Class with H.M.S. Indefatigable, Alfred died on 31st of May 1916 at the age of 29. Alfred was born at Pembroke Dock on 16 February 1887, a son of Charles and Margaret Owen. In 1891 his family lived at 8 King Street, Pembroke. By 1901 Alfred’s mother had died and his family lived at 4 King Street, Pembroke, and later his father lived at 3 Commercial Row, Pembroke Dock. Note Commonwealth War Graves states his father’s name was Thomas: no record has been found that corroborates this. Battle of Jutland

James Reynolds

An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Porpoise, James died on 31st of May 1916 at the age of 32. James was born at Raveningham on 1 April 1882, a son of John and Hannah Reynolds. In 1891 his family lived at Lowestoft Road, Flixton, and by 1901 they were living at Sunny Bank, Herringfleet Road, Herringfleet. In 1911 their address was 12 Sunny Bank Cottages, Herringfleet Road, Herringfleet. James joined the Royal Navy on 24 February 1898 and served continually in the Royal Navy until his death at the Battle of Jutland. He was drafted to H.M.S. Porpoise on 1 January 1915. Ivan William Howlett

A Leading Stoker with H.M.S. Queen Mary. Ivan died on 31st of May 1916 at the age of 26. Ivan was born at Lowestoft on 6 October 1888, a son of Benjamin James and Hannah Howlett. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 16 October 1888. In 1891 his family lived at 20 Ontario Road and by 1901 at 35 East Street. By 1911 they were living at the Rear of Rant Score. He was a brother of Harold Robert Howlett of 22 Bevan Street, Lowestoft. Charles Henry Fox

An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Queen Mary, Charles died on 31st of May 1916 at the age of 22. Charles was born at Lowestoft on 14 November 1893, a son of Charles Henry and Emily Lavenia Fox of Blundeston Lowestoft. In 1901 his family lived at Flixton Road, Blundeston. By 1911 his parents were living at The Street, Blundeston. Charles was working as a farm labourer when he joined the Royal Navy, as a Boy 2nd Class, on 27 July 1909. William Thomas Robert Doylend

A Chief Petty Officer with H.M.S. Queen Mary, William died on 31st of May 1916 at the age of 37. William was born at Holbrook, Suffolk, on 29 September 1877, a son of Robert and Sarah Ann Doylend. In 1881 his family loved at Chelmondiston, Suffolk. By 1891 his family were living at 8 Battery Green Road, Lowestoft, and his father was a Commissioned Boatman in the Coastguard.
