Ludendorff Offensive

By early 1918, Allied troops on the Western Front were weary from years of launching failed campaigns against the Germans. They were overstretched, short of manpower and suffering from low morale. Herbert Stanley Beckett

A Private with then 52nd Battalion, Herbert died on 24th of March 1918, and the age of 21.Herbert was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of Richard and Edith Beckett. Herbert's first names were Herbert Stanley but he served in the Australian Army as Stanley Beckett and this is how he is commemorated.  Ludendorff Offensive

Walter John Rouse

A Company Sergeant Major with 12th Field Company, Walter died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 42. Walter was born at Pakefield in 1876, a son of Latha and Eliza Harriet Rouse. In 1881 his family lived at 2 Beanes Cottages, London Road, Pakefield. BY 1891 they were living at 79 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and later they lived at 72 Osborne Street, Lowestoft.Walter married Ellen Mooney at Kilworth, County Cork, on 12 August 1910. After Walter's death Ellen lived at Ballyderowne, Kilworth, County Cork. the100, Distinguished Conduct Medal, Mentioned in Despatches, Ludendorff Offensive

Kenneth John Cooper

An Able Seaman, Kenneth died on 25th of March 1918 at the age of 20.Kenneth was born at Lound on 29 January 1898, a son of John and Rose Cooper of The Street, Lound. He was baptisesd at Saint John the Baptist Church, Lound, on 1 May 1898. In 1911 Kenneth was an errand boy (domestic). Kenneth attested for the Army Reserve on 11 December 1915 but was called up to serve with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 16 June 1917 and actually joined the Royal Naval Division which was designated to fight on land but was made up of naval personnel.  Ludendorff Offensive

George Edward Ayres

A Private with 4th Bn., George died on 23rd of March 1918 at the age of 37. George was born at Lowestoft on 2 March 1881, a son of David Charles and Maria Harriett Ayres. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 1 May 1881. By 1891 his family were living at 8 Walton Road, Lowestoft, and this was George's home for the rest of his life. In 1901 he worked as a blacksmith's apprentice, and by 1911 he was an auxiliary postman.   Ludendorff Offensive

Sydney Arthur Hayes

A Private with 2nd Bn., Sydney died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 36. Son of William Gunstone and Ellen Heather Hayes. Husband of Lea Eugenie Hayes of 50 Acton Road Lowestoft.  See also Hindenburg Offensive Ludendorff Offensive

Victor Albert Lougo

A Private with 2nd Bn., Victor died on 22nd of March 1918 at the age of 23. Victor was born at Walpole, Suffolk, in 1895, a son of Alfred and Ellen Lougo. In 1901 his family lived at Walpole Road, Bramfield, and this was still their address in 1911 when Victor worked as a farm labourer. Subsequently his parents lived at Laurel Farm Cottage, London Road, Kessingland. Victor was living at Blyford when he enlisted in the Army at Bury Saint Edmunds. Victor served with A Company 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment.  Ludendorff Offensive

Birkwood George Boon

A Private with 3rd Battalion, Birkwood died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 20. Birkwood was born at Corton in 1898, a son of George William and Alice Margaret Boon. In 1901 his family lived at Church Lane, Corton, and by 1911 they were living at Sandpit Cottage, Corton. Ludendorff Offensive

Mark Alfred Raven

A Sergeant with 51st Battalion. Mark died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 24. Mark was born at Mutford on 22 June 1893, a son of Alfred and Louisa Raven. He was baptised at Mutford on 20 August 1893. By 1901 has family were living at Beccles Road, Mutford. Mark enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft and initially served with the Suffolk Regiment with service number 14361. Ludendorff Offensive

Arthur Clement George

A Private with 6th Bn. Arthur Charles died on 28th of March 1918. Arthur was born 'Near The Bell', Carlton Colville, in 1888, a son of Walter and Emily George. In 1891 his family lived at 16 Severn Terrace, Oulto Broad. By 1901 they were living at Chipperfields Yard, Bridge Road, Oulton. By 1911 Arthur's father had died and his family lived at 5 Lothing Street, Oulton Broad.Arthur begin working as a lock keeper for the Great Eastern Railway in 1905 and he worked at Lowestoft Harbour.
