Military Medal

The Military Medal (MM) was a military decoration awarded to personnel of the British Army and other arms of the armed forces, and to personnel of other Commonwealth countries, below commissioned rank, for bravery in battle on land. The award was established in 1916, with retrospective application to 1914, and was awarded to other ranks for "acts of gallantry and devotion to duty under fire". William Thomas Baker

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, William died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 30. William was born at Lowestoft on 23 December 1885, a son of William Thomas and Harriet Mary Ann Baker. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 7 March 1886. In 1891 his family lived at 8 Thurlow Road and this was still their home in 1901 when William was an apprentice printer. Charles Edward Catchpole

A Second Lieutenant with the 7th Battalion, Charles died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 21. Charles was born at Kessingland in 1895, a son of George and Elizabeth Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 17 May 1896. In 1901 his family lived at Eddystone House, Church Road, Kessingland, and this was Charles’ home for the rest of his life. Charles Evelyn Branwhite

A Lance Corporal with the 7th Battalion, Charles died on 24th of November 1917 at the age of 33. Charles was born at Kirkley on 24 October 1884, a son of Charles and Ellen Mary Branwhite. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church, Lowestoft, on 16 January 1885 and his family lived qt 13 Kirkley Villas. In 1891 his family lived at 3 Gordon Road. Charles’ mother died at Lowestoft in 1892 and his father moved to Ipswich, where he died in 1897. Charles was educated at the Grammar School, Stamford, Lincolnshire. Military Medal

Herbert Garrod

A Private with the 8th Battalion, Herbert died on 19th of May 1917 at the age of 27. Herbert was born at Calton Colville in 1890, a son of John and Elizabeth Garrod. Herbert was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 1 May 1891, and his family lived at Lowestoft Road, Carlton Colville. In 1901 the family lived ‘near Low Farm’, Carlton Colville, and by 1911 at Hall Cottages Carlton Colville, and Herbert worked as a cowman on a farm. Military Medal

Alfred Edward Dowson

Formerly a Lance Sergeant with the 8th Battalion, Alfred died on 27th of March 1920 at the age of 23.Alfred was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of George and Louisa Elizabeth Dowson. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 4 December 1896 and his family lived at 221 Clapham Road. In 1901 his family lived at 26 Grosvenor Road, Great Yarmouth. By 1911 they had moved to 7 Spurgeon’s Score, Lowestoft, and this would be Alfred’s home for the rest of his life. In 1911 Alfred worked as an errand boy at a clothier’s shop. Military Medal

Clifford Charles Bunn

A Corporal with the 9th Battalion, Clifford died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 21. Clifford was born at Barnby in 1897, a son of Thomas George and Ellen Bunn. In 1901 his family lived at Beccles Road, Barnby, and this was still their address in 1911 when Clifford worked as a butcher’s boy. Alec George Aldis

A Lieutenant with No. 41 R.M. Commando, Alec died on 6th of June 1944, at the age of 28. Alec was a son of Alfred and Edith Aldis. Alfred was born at Southwold and moved to Lowestoft, with his wife Edith, before World War One.During the First World War Alfred served in the Royal Naval Reserve, on trawlers Paramount and John Lincoln, and so he, and Edith, moved to Ramsgate, which is where their son Alec was born in 1916. By 1921 they had moved back to Lowestoft and in 1939 they lived at 14 Surrey Street. Military Medal

John Henry Ingles

A Private with 1/22nd Battalion London Regiment, John died on 16th of February 1919 at the age of 26.John was born at Lowestoft on 27 December 1892, a son of John Henry and Alice Maud Ingles. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 18 January 1893 and his family lived at Whapload Road. In 1901 his family lived at Lauriston Cottage, Hall Road, Oulton. This was still their home in 1911 when John, like his father, was a baker. Military Medal

William John Peter Cooper

A Sergeant with the 11th Battalion. William died on 7th of August 1918 at the age of 33. William was born at Lowestoft on 21 November 1884, a son of William and Mary Cooper. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 9 March 1890, and his family lived at 253 Raglan Street. In 1891 they were still living at 253 Raglan Street. By 1901 they were living at The Cottage, Waveney Drive, Kirkley, and William worked as an errand boy at the port. In 1911 they lived at Colville House, Carlton Colville, and later at Birds Farm, Birds Lane, Lowestoft. Military Medal
